1. What are elocution lessons?
Elocution lessons help you develop clear pronunciation, accurate articulation and an expressive, confident speaking voice.
At BaTCS Global, our training combines traditional British drama-school elocution techniques with practical phonetics exercises.
We work on individual speech sounds, pronunciation, intonation, vocal expression and the habits that influence the way you communicate.
2. Who can benefit from elocution lessons?
Elocution lessons are suitable for both native and non-native English speakers.
Our students include:
International professionals who want to improve their English pronunciation.
Business executives and entrepreneurs.
Barristers, lawyers and other public speakers.
Teachers and university lecturers.
Professionals preparing for presentations and interviews.
Native English speakers who want to refine their accent and speaking voice.
You do not need to have a strong foreign accent to benefit from elocution training.
3. Do you offer elocution lessons online or in person?
Yes. We offer individual elocution lessons online and in person in London, W14 9JX.
Both formats provide personalised tuition, practical pronunciation exercises and professional feedback.
4. What happens during a Speech Analysis?
Your training programme begins with a personalised Speech Analysis.
During this 45-minute session, we assess your speech to identify your pronunciation strengths and areas that need improvement.
Following the assessment, you will receive:
An understanding of your current speech patterns.
Identification of specific pronunciation difficulties.
Recommendations on what to improve.
An estimate of how many lessons you may need.
A detailed written report.
A proposed programme of weekly sessions tailored to your goals.
The Speech Analysis costs £95 and can be conducted online or in person in London.
5. Why do I need a Speech Analysis before starting elocution lessons?
Everyone has different pronunciation habits and speech patterns.
Some students need to work on individual vowel and consonant sounds, while others need to improve articulation, intonation, rhythm or vocal expression.
A Speech Analysis helps identify your particular needs rather than following a generic programme.
It also gives you a clear starting point and a practical plan for improvement.
6. How much do elocution lessons cost?
Our current lesson prices are:
One 60-minute lesson: £95.
Five lessons: £450 (5% discount).
Ten lessons: £855 (10% discount).
The initial Speech Analysis costs £95 and lasts 45 minutes.
7. How many elocution lessons will I need?
The number of lessons depends on your starting point, objectives and the amount of independent practice you undertake.
During your Speech Analysis, we assess your speech and provide an estimate of the number of lessons you may need.
We recommend weekly lessons supported by regular practice between sessions.
8. How often should I have elocution lessons?
We generally recommend one lesson per week.
This gives you time to practise the exercises, develop new pronunciation habits and consolidate what you have learned before moving on to the next stage.
Consistency is essential when developing new speech patterns.
9. Do I need to practise between lessons?
Yes. Independent practice is an essential part of successful elocution training.
We recommend 10–45 minutes of daily practice using our professional pronunciation apps.
Your tutor will also provide tailored homework based on the areas covered during your lessons.
Combining individual tuition with regular practice helps you develop correct speech patterns and turn them into lasting habits.
10. Can elocution lessons help me acquire Received Pronunciation (RP)?
Yes. We offer specialist training in Received Pronunciation, traditionally associated with educated British English and professional communication.
Our approach draws on traditional British drama-school techniques, focusing on accurate articulation, vowel and consonant sounds, word stress and natural intonation.
11. Can native English speakers benefit from elocution lessons?
Absolutely. Elocution is about more than changing your accent.
Native English speakers can benefit from improving their articulation, developing a more expressive voice, eliminating undesirable speech habits and refining their pronunciation.
One of our students, an Oxford graduate barrister and native English speaker, took lessons to soften his Australian accent and acquire RP.
He also wanted to develop a more powerful and authoritative speaking voice for his professional work.
After his training, he reported dramatic improvements in his pronunciation, vocal power and expressiveness.
12. Can elocution lessons help me become a better public speaker?
Yes. Effective public speaking depends on much more than knowing what to say.
Your voice needs to communicate your message clearly and hold the audience's attention.
During elocution training, we can work on:
Voice projection and power.
Pitch and vocal variety.
Speaking pace.
Strategic pauses.
Articulation and pronunciation.
Expressiveness and confidence.
These skills are particularly valuable for professionals who regularly address audiences.
13. Can elocution lessons help me speak more clearly?
Yes. Clear speech depends on accurate articulation and the correct production of individual speech sounds.
We examine how you use your tongue, lips and jaw to produce sounds and identify habits that may affect your clarity.
You will learn practical techniques and exercises to improve your articulation.
14. What is the difference between elocution lessons and accent reduction lessons?
Accent reduction focuses primarily on pronunciation features that distinguish your current accent from your target accent.
Elocution is broader. It includes pronunciation, articulation, vocal expression, intonation, rhythm, voice projection and the overall quality of your spoken communication.
At BaTCS Global, our training can address both areas, depending on your individual objectives.
15. Do you provide homework after elocution lessons?
Yes. You will receive exercises tailored to the subjects covered during your lessons.
These may include individual sounds, words, sentences, reading exercises and other practical speaking activities.
We also recommend using our specialist pronunciation apps to reinforce what you learn during tuition.
16. What makes BaTCS Global's elocution teaching approach different?
Our method draws on traditional British drama-school phonetics and elocution techniques.
We believe that effective pronunciation training should be systematic and practical.
Rather than simply asking students to imitate native speakers, we explain how speech sounds are produced and teach the physical techniques needed to pronounce them correctly.
Our lessons combine detailed explanations, individual feedback and enjoyable speaking exercises.
17. Who teaches the elocution lessons?
BaTCS Global was founded by Olga Smith and Linda James, a trained phonetician and actress.
Olga Smith is a linguist, public speaker and co-author of the Get Rid of Your Accent book series.
Her approach combines traditional British elocution techniques with practical phonetics training, helping students understand and improve their individual speech patterns.
18. What do students say about their elocution lessons?
Our students have highlighted the detailed assessment, practical explanations and individual attention they receive.
Ilya Stibulaev, PhD, from Stanford University, described how Olga carefully assessed his speech and worked through his pronunciation difficulties in detail.
He particularly appreciated the opportunity to speak extensively during lessons, receive corrections and understand how to improve his articulation.
He reported substantial improvements after just several lessons.
An Oxford graduate barrister also described significant improvements in his pronunciation, vocal power, authority and expressiveness following individual tuition.
19. Can I combine elocution lessons with books and pronunciation apps?
Absolutely. We encourage students to combine individual tuition with independent learning.
Our professional apps, books and video courses provide additional exercises and pronunciation models that you can use between lessons.
This combination makes it easier to practise regularly and reinforce what you learn with your tutor.
20. How do I book elocution lessons?
The first step is to book your personalised Speech Analysis.
During this 45-minute session, we assess your speech, identify areas for improvement and recommend a suitable programme of lessons.
