The Most Mispronounced Words in English
The pronunciation of work, word, worse, world, worm and worthy is one of the biggest challenges for many English learners. I know this from personal experience—it took me six months of dedicated practice to master these sounds.
Why Is It So Difficult?
The difficulty lies in the transition between two very different sounds:
/w/ – Your lips form a tight, rounded "whistle" shape and are pushed forward.
/ɜː/ – Your mouth becomes neutral and slightly open, with the lips relaxing and spreading naturally.
For speakers of many languages—including German, Russian and French—this sound combination simply doesn't exist.
As a result, many students keep their lips rounded after pronouncing /w/ instead of relaxing them for /ɜː/. This changes the vowel to /ɔː/, producing a completely different word.
For example:
work /wɜːk/ → walk /wɔːk/
word /wɜːd/ → ward /wɔːd/
A small change in lip position makes a big difference to your pronunciation.

Clear pronunciation isn't about speaking faster—it's about training your mouth to make the correct movements. Once your muscles learn the right positions, you will say these words correctly even without thinking about it.
